Personally, nature is a place of inspiration and it relaxes the mind. Although tracking in the forest is tiring physically but it slow down my pace to observe the surroundings.

Sunlight created atmospheric feeling in different timing of the day. Shadow and lights from the sun make the whole area dramatic. The greenery in the forest joined with the sun in changing hue and tonality. Insects, withered trees and leafs and so on makes the place interesting, together they form an abstract and illusion picture.

While standing under the tree the feeling of connecting with it is quite intense. What had the tree went through standing tall and strong after many years. The criss-crossing roots make an interesting pattern on the ground. Soil, lichen and other creatures growing at its base make-up part of it too.

Another interesting organism is the fungus. They come in the shape of funnels, cups, puffballs, corals and so on. The vivid colour from it influences in the painting and it is difficult to re-create.

With all these, the colours, forms and texture had loaded onto the canvas and it is the painting of inspirational.

Lake Bera. Oil on linen. 9.5x12cm x 12 pieces. Sep 2010

I wanted to see blue sky and lake view and took a trip to Lake Bera, Pahang, Malaysia. However it was a hazy August, the sky and the lake are  almost in one colour; grey. I cannot help thinking that it wanted to show me in this colour and challenges me on how do I use this colour in my works.

Grey will be the back ground for this series of small works. I had added colours to show the land and vegetation. While exploring the lake by speed boat, it brings me into the maze formed by water plants. The texture in the painting is like an uneven earth, the wave form by the boat, the fishes in the lake and the breezes across it.

Nature Map.
Oil on linen. 109x109cm. May 2009

It is chaotic in the beginning, but in the process and to ‘look after’ the painting till it completely dried is an enjoyment in personal. In the process, the mediums, colours, composition and layering are very challenging and seem like living and breathing on it.

‘Looking after’ the painting is about the composition when the canvas has to tilt to a certain angle to get the right position when it is still wet or semi dried.

The background colour of reddish brown is a stable platform holding the layer above. The same when everything has to hold on to something around them. The Naples Yellow stir and mixed with solvent unevenly creates the transparent spot where it could represent all kinds of liquid in the nature like the lake, ponding water or water drops. The thin to the deeper blue is like stretches of trees in farther and farther in the nature in a way.

The painting is a compilation of some wilderness of short trip to Malaysia and also visits to nature reserves and parks in Singapore. Most of the time it overwhelms the brain but certain image could be extracted. Sometime only the essence of colours or form that one could not recognise is left behind.

Green Pool.
Acrylic and Chinese ink on linen. 109x109cm. Feb 2009

A place named Green Pool in Perth, Australia. I was attracted by its name. I was drawn to the rocks. The alga grows on it, the gap between the rocks, the crack lines and traces of black surfaces on it.

This scene had been in my mind for a period and I had decided to use the medium, acrylic and Chinese ink to produce this painting in year 2009.

Visiting the Cave.
Oil on linen. 53x53cm x 2 pieces. Jan 2007

The worlds inside the cave are confined, wet, quiet and dark. When one required going through a narrow tunnel to reach to the other chamber is a scary feeling. The contradicting feeling came after passing through the narrow tunnel when multi-colour and dramatic lights falls at certain area like the wall of the cave or windows of the cave pays off. It is like a rebirth every time.

The memories of those scenes and feeling keep throwing back, wishing to calm my fear and showing the beauty of the cave on the canvas at the same time

The greenery of the tea plantation is makeup of many shades and tones, it is like a thick and soft carpet covers one mountain and another. Workers collecting tealeaves, sky, sunlight, misty air and cold weather…many sweet memories and picturesque we are part of.
